Coordinated voyages and tourist routes will increase safety in Arctic regions

March 23rd, 2012

On 20 March 2012, the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Danish Maritime Authority met with the Government of Greenland and Greenland Tourism to discuss safety of navigation in the Arctic regions. There was general agreement that there is a need for increased work on measures to enhance navigational safety in the Arctic regions.

”It must be possible to experience the Arctic regions and the unique nature safely. Therefore, we will examine how coordinated voyages can be carried out in practice so that both safety and the experience remain intact”, says Head of Division Per Sønderstrup from the Danish Maritime Authority.

”Many good ideas were presented. For example, we will examine in more detail whether we can identify some tourist routes where the ships will be navigating well-known waters. This will definitely reduce the risk of accidents,” stresses Per Sønderstrup.
