Optimal Balance – tourism management workshop in Longyearbyen

This week a workshop focusing on a balanced approach to tourism development in Svalbard has taken place in Longyearbyen. The event which was spread over three days has seen many speakers and participants join together to discuss, define and pitch research projects that can help Svalbard find the optimal balance in tourist development.

A new study of the economic impact of cruise tourism in Svalbard shows that expedition and conventional cruise ships made a substantial contribution to the local economy by purchasing goods and services for more than USD 12 million last year.

Melissa Nacke joins AECO as environmental specialist

AECO is pleased to welcome new staff member Melissa Nacke, who assumed the position of environmental specialist today. Melissa will manage AECO’s Clean Seas project and be involved in a range of tasks connected to AECO’s efforts to safeguard the environment. Melissa is Canadian and will be based in AECO’s main office in Tromsø.

New guidelines for visiting the world’s most northerly community: Ny-Ålesund

New community specific guidelines have been developed for Ny-Ålesund, the world’s most northerly community, in response to increasing visitor numbers. These guidelines created by Kings Bay, which facilitates the international research activities that take place in high Arctic settlement. Ny-Ålesund joins the ranks of Longyearbyen (Svalbard), Seyðisfjörður (Iceland) and Sisimiut (Greenland), three Arctic communities that have also created community specific guidelines using a template developed by the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).
