Municipality and Local Media Highlight Consideration in the Nuuk Fjord

The Fjord around Nuuk, capital of Greenland

The Municipality of Sermersooq has published a recommendation encouraging cruise operators to show consideration when operating in the Nuuk Fjord (Nuup Kangerlua), citing concerns raised by local residents about the presence of large cruise vessels in the area. The municipality encourages operators to respect local hunting and fishing activities, avoid disturbing wildlife, and be mindful of the fjord’s importance to local communities.

The topic has also received coverage in the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, reflecting the ongoing public discussion around tourism activity in the fjord.

The municipality’s previously submitted zoning proposal for the Nuuk Fjord remains under review by the Government of Greenland and has not yet been approved.
