A Stakeholder Cruise Focused on Arctic Safety

On one of last season’s Stakeholder Cruises, Dr. Rob Brown, a naval architect and senior research scientist at Memorial University’s Marine Institute, embarked on a journey aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen to explore Arctic safety protocols.

AECO’s Stakeholder Cruises provide a unique opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of the expedition cruise industry. Rob joined HX’s vessel in Nuuk, Greenland, and sailed on to Cambridge Bay, Canada, with a focus on the critical safety protocols and operational procedures essential for ensuring safe Arctic expedition cruising.

Collecting Data to Benefit Research

Throughout his time on board, he observed safety drills, inspected lifesaving equipment—from lifeboats and rescue boats to immersion suits and survival gear—and conducted over 20 tests of emergency beacons in collaboration with Canadian authorities. “I am hopeful that the data I collected will also be of benefit to the advancement of my research program and to the Canadian authorities,” said Rob, underscoring the broader impact of his work beyond just the cruise experience.

“Safety Was Taken Very Seriously”

In addition to observing safety drills, Rob engaged in many discussions with the expedition team about risk management during excursions in one of the world’s most challenging environments. He was impressed with the team’s thoroughness, stating, “safety was taken very seriously by crew and expedition staff at all times both onboard the ship, transiting to shore and onshore.” This commitment to safety not only stood out to Rob but also underscores AECO’s dedication to upholding high operational standards across the Arctic cruise industry.

“The onboard team’s approach to respecting and protecting wildlife and the environment, as well as their thoughtful interactions with local communities, was exemplary. The team’s commitment to professionalism was so clear that passengers understood and respected the safety measures, with no attempts to take risks, get closer to wildlife, or leave waste behind. I was truly impressed,” concluded Rob after the cruise.

Stakeholder Cruises

AECO’s Stakeholder Cruises aims to provide stakeholders a better understanding of the expedition cruise industry and to open a dialogue about safety, cooperation, and value creation in the communities AECO visits.
