Our Story & Values

In 2003, the growth of tourism in Svalbard highlighted the need for a platform to address relevant issues within the expedition cruise industry. As a result, eight expedition cruise operators founded AECO.

Since then, AECO has remained dedicated to ensuring that Arctic expedition cruise tourism benefits the region while prioritizing the natural environment and cultural preservation, local communities, and safe operations.

Today, AECO is acknowledged as a trusted and responsible voice within the expedition cruise industry.

Our Objectives & Strategies

• Be recognized as the leading organization representing expedition cruise operators in the Arctic.
• Promote and advocate for the adoption of specific standards and guidelines for operating expedition cruises in the Arctic.
• Encourage the employment of qualified guides and staff knowledgeable about the Arctic’s environment, history, and culture.
• Act as a contact and advisory group for authorities responsible for managing and regulating Arctic lands, waters, and human activities.

How we Work

AECO’s members shape the association’s work and priorities. The guidelines, standards, and measures are established by the membership and are mandatory for all members to follow. The geographical operational area is also defined by the membership, Currently, the operational areas include Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Greenland, Arctic Canada, and Iceland.

Decisions on matters like these are made at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which serves as the primary forum where AECO’s membersmake important decisions regarding the association’s direction and activities.

AECO has an extensive external stakeholder engagement that work towards AECO’s objectives and representing the interest of the membership. These engagements gather input and help ensure that AECO’s work and progress align with the broader interest of the region.
