With a strong academic and professional background in marine-related fields, the newest member of AECO’s secretariat brings operational expertise to AECO’s work in the Arctic. Meet Leoni Dickerhoff, AECO’s maritime operations generalist.
Holding a bachelor’s degree in marine science and a master’s degree in marine affairs, Leoni Dickerhoff has developed a solid foundation in marine management, maritime law, and ocean policy. Over the past decade, her experience has spanned expedition operations, outdoor education, and tourism, working in roles that combine logistics, science, and leadership at sea. “My career has been driven by a genuine passion for the ocean and for creating meaningful, responsible experiences in remote environments,” she says.
Background in Hurtigruten/HX Operations
Leoni brings a unique blend of operational knowledge, science communication, and team coordination. Her previous roles with Hurtigruten/HX—including science and education coordinator, expedition leader, and expedition quality development facilitator—have given her valuable insight into the challenges AECO’s members face. “Working across vessels of different sizes has given me an appreciation for the varied challenges our members face, from small expedition teams to larger operations,” she says. “I hope this perspective will help me support AECO’s work in a practical, collaborative way.”
Bridging Sea Experience with Shore-Based Impact
After several years working at sea, Leoni is making a transition to a shore-based role in a position that offers a connection to the expedition industry while drawing on her interest in maritime law and policy. “To keep this industry strong and sustainable, we need to work together to support local communities and make environmentally responsible decisions,” she says. “AECO’s mission aligns closely with my own values, and I hope in this role I can help both our members and the Arctic places we visit to thrive in the years ahead.”
What are you most excited about as you get started?
I’m mostly looking forward to connecting with AECO’s members and learning more about their work and priorities. There’s a great deal of experience and knowledge within this community, and I’m excited to listen, learn, and contribute wherever I can to strengthen safe and sustainable expedition cruising in the Arctic.
