Aurora Expeditions is Australia's first polar charter operator, specialising in voyages to Antarctica, the European High Arctic and Greenland. Aurora Expeditions was founded in 1992 by Greg Mortimer, OAM, who made the first Australian ascent of Mount Everest (1984) and was the first Australian to climb both Mount Everest and K2 (1990). Greg was a pioneer in developing commercially guided climbing from ships visiting the Antarctic Peninsula. He began guiding the “Shackleton Crossing” in 2001 and was instrumental in the development of it as a viable commercial addition to the Aurora portfolio of activities. He has since sold the company but remains intimately involved as a consultant and ambassador. We continue the adventurous and pioneering spirit within Aurora and return to undertake the crossing with clients every year. Aurora Expeditions believes that travel to Antarctica creates lifelong ambassadors for preserving Antarctica's future. Sensitivity to environmental considerations has been a key factor in Aurora Expeditions' development and continues to be a core part of its culture. Aurora Expeditions takes an integrated approach with passengers from the moment they book, offering an educational program that ensures that travellers arrive in the area fully briefed. Aurora Expeditions has earned a worldwide reputation for product innovation. It was the first company to offer camping, ice climbing, sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving trips to the Antarctic Peninsula. In addition to its polar destinations, Aurora Expeditions runs expedition cruises along the rugged Kimberley coastline of Western Australia, High Arctic, PNG and Russian Coast. Aurora Expeditions was the first Australian member of AECO Members of AECO are dedicated to implementing initiatives that ensure Arctic tourism is both responsible and environmentally sensitive. Aurora Expeditions believes that its expedition cruises provide tourism options that both celebrate and support the environment. Aurora Expeditions looks forward to continuing to play a key role in the responsible development of expedition cruising to the world's most remote and beautiful regions.
