EMTOW – Emergency Towing

Enhancing Emergency Towing Preparedness in the Arctic

The EMTOW project (Emergency Towing) aims to improve maritime safety and environmental protection by developing better emergency towing solutions for ships that lose power or control at sea—especially vessels not currently required by IMO regulations to carry specialized towing equipment or procedures.

This work is highly relevant for Arctic expedition cruise operators, where the consequences of a drifting vessel can be severe due to remote conditions and environmental sensitivity.

AECO actively contributes to the project through knowledge-sharing and participation, ensuring that the solutions developed are practical, effective, and aligned with real-world Arctic cruise operations.

The goal is to prevent accidents and protect the environment by making emergency towing safer and more accessible for all types of vessels operating in Arctic waters.
