ARCSAR

The Arctic Security Preparedness Network (ARCSAR) project, launched in 2018, has served as a critical platform for AECO since joining as one of 21 international partners.

About

AECO’s role has been to represent the expedition cruise industry’s perspectives and to engage with Arctic Search and Rescue (SAR) stakeholders. Led by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center North-Norway, ARCSAR focuses on enhancing SAR capabilities in the Arctic. AECO continues to collaborate with authorities, SAR responders, and researchers to improve SAR preparedness and response for the expedition cruise sector in Arctic waters.

AECOs most valuable impact has been as a facilitator for collaboration, helpingbridge the knowledge gap between SARresponders, authorities, and operators. Examples of important arenas are theannual Joint Arctic SAR events, exercises, projects, and other activities related to search and rescue.

In 2016, AECO initiated the first large scale Joint Arctic SAR tabletop exercise(TTX) and workshop. This was a collaboration with the Icelandic Coast Guard and the Norwegian cruise liner, Hurtigruten and brought together industry, SAR entities and academia.

The exercise was a follow-up on several previously organized larger Arctic joint SAR responder’s TTX and LIVEX’s, such as the Arctic Zephyr and the SAREX Greenland
Sea 2012 and 2013.
