Through online exams, guides and expedition leaders test their knowledge of AECO guidelines and relevant regulations.

Annual Tests

AECO’s members have decided that field staff and designated crew must complete the Online Assessments annually. This is a mandatory requirement.

The assessments focus on AECO’s guidelines and principles, along with knowledge of Svalbard, Greenland, Canada, and Iceland.

Each test consists of multiple-choice and yes/no questions.

Field Staff Assessments

All field staff working with passengers must pass both the test for their area of work, and the General Questions test.

Mariners Assessment

Designated crew—including the captain, staff captain, officers on navigational watch, environmental officer, chief engineer, lead hotel officer or manager, helicopter pilot, and submersible pilot—must take the Mariners Assessment. If any bridge crew also work as guides in the field, they must complete both the relevant Field Staff Assessment and the Mariners Assessment.

Test Certificate

A score of 85% or higher on each test is required to pass.

A certificate can be downloaded and forwarded to the employer as documentation after passing a test.

Responsibility

Operating members are responsible for ensuring staff compliance with AECO obligations.
