Clean Up Svalbard

Cleanups on Svalbard's Beaches

Clean Up Svalbard is the longest‑running environmental initiative within AECO, originating as a member‑led effort in collaboration with the Governor of Svalbard. Since 2000, AECO members have contributed to the removal of marine litter from remote coastal areas where access is limited and cleanup capacity is scarce.

Cleanup activities are carried out in connection with expedition operations. AECO members report their cleanups through AECO’s reporting system, creating a long‑term record of cleanup locations, the amount andt ypes of litter collected, as well as the amount of people involved.

Over time, Clean Up Svalbard has developed into a valuable source of information on marine litter in Svalbard. The project supports a better understanding of spatial patterns and trends in coastal pollution while also increasing awareness among expedition staff and visitors of the scale and persistence of marine debris in Arctic environments.
